anakbayanla:

Catch the first-ever episode of Anakbayan LA Radio next Friday, February 3rd from 8-9:30pm at ustream.tv/channel/anakbayanla!
We’re stepping it up for 2012! This is the beginning of our monthly radio show that will air every 1st Friday.
We’ll have our very own Anakbayan LA DJ’s spinning live sets of progressive music on the 1’s and 2’s. In between DJ sets, we’ll have political discussions sharing our analysis on current issues that affect us all locally, nationally, and internationally.
We’re also keeping our ears to the streets with interviews featuring youth, workers, community organizers, and everyday people breaking down what’s really going on in the community and the world. And on occasion, you might catch a live performance sometime during the show…
For our first show, we’ll be discussing the fascist NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) that took away everyone’s constitutional right to a fair trial, the groundbreaking People’s State of the City event happening in Long Beach on February 29th, as well as our current campaigns for the California Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, Justice 4 Melissa Roxas, and US Troops Out of the Philippines.
It’s gonna be a fresh 90 minutes every month that you don’t wanna miss.  Tell all your friends and let’s chop it up in the chatroom…

BEATROCK MUSIC COLLABORATES WITH BAY AREA ARTIST LEO DOCUYANAN TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY OF INDIE HIP HOP LABEL.
For the 2 year celebration, the love for art & will extend to the visual realm; as the event will premiere a special Beatrock Music art exhibit courtesy of photographer Leo Docuyanan. Docuyanan’s name is already on the radar of many; especially known for his portraits of Bay Area Hip Hop icons. “I was already familiar with his portraits” says Strand, “When Leo first brought up the idea of the collaboration, I was honored that he saw a natural connection between his work and our artists. We are very excited to team up with him.”

Each Beatrock Music artist sat with Docuyanan to shoot their portrait for the exhibit. “Everyone in the Beatrock family has their own individual identity and musical aesthetic” says Docuyanan. Guests will be able to see the visual personalities of each artist, and also see what connects them as musical collective. Docuyanan notes “The sound of the label aims celebrate that golden era of Hip Hop, combined with each artist’s independent and quality driven styles. The music is organic and free-flowing. I’m glad it has been embraced by all walks of life.”

Music fans will be treated to performances from label artists, including: Rocky Rivera, Power Struggle, Otayo Dubb, Bwan, and Kiwi. The excitement is also building around a special performance from Bambu with Seattle based artist, Prometheus Brown  (of Blue Scholars). The two just completed a national tour, and have previously collaborated on WALK INTO A BAR, released earlier this year on Beatrock Music. Bambu hopes this will be a night that fans will not soon forget. “They can expect Pro Brown and I to wild-the-F-out! Ha!”

@ ABSV December General Assembly. Getting ready for:

HUMAN RIGHTS ACTION
December 10, 2011
130-330PM @ San Jose Peace & Justice Center
48 South 7th St., San Jose, CA

In commemoration of Human Rights Day 2011, this Saturday, ABSV will be joining other local community orgs in a multi-cultural panel discussion on the state of human rights in the world today. Human rights violations continue to be a world issue, especially in the Philippines, where activists, journalists, scientists, and common people continue to be harassed, killed, and stripped down from basic human rights every year.

If you can’t make it, you can still show solidarity and make a statement by making signs for human rights and uploading them onto your facebook profiles and various social media.

And if you’re in The City or in the East Bay, there’ll be some action there as well. Check out the FB event: https://www.facebook.com/events/334635023218261/

ANAKBAYAN SILICON VALLEY OFFICIAL CHAPTER LAUNCH
NOVEMBER 30, 2011

LAUNCH STATEMENT

As Anakbayan Silicon Valley formally launches as an official chapter of the comprehensive youth organization rooted in the Philippine youth movement. Today not only marks a day to celebrate our chapter’s formation but the many other Anakbayan chapters in the Philippines, Canada and US. Today we also remember as the birthdate of Andres Bonifacio, a youth, a leader, a revolutionary and the 13th anniversary of the founding of Anakbayan.

As the 6th Anakbayan chapter to have been established in the US, the kabataan of ABSV see the need to advance the people’s movement that has been ongoing in our motherland, to bridge the gap of our stories of migrant youth and 2nd,3rd,4th generation Pin@y and to further arouse, organize and mobilize the kabataan of Silicon Valley.

With Andres Bonifacio’s stories infusing our current experience with the past, ABSV takes the spirit of Andres Bonifacio and in turn making our own mark in ourstory. We are the Andres Bonifacio of today! Revolution, movement, resistance runs through our unwritten text books, it runs through our minds and through our hearts. Anakbayan Silicon Valley will uphold and advance the movement that sparked in 1896 by engaging in a movement of our own. Remembering what has come before us to better serve the youth and people of today.

Police pen up and mace female “Occupy Wall Street” protesters

In a disturbing scene from today’s “Occupy Wall Street” protests, a group of peaceful female protesters were rounded up in an orange-colored mesh pen by police and subsequently sprayed with mace without any provocation.

In spite of multiple reported incidents of possible police violence, major media outlets seem to be content to let the protests go by completely unreported, following the same “who-cares” attitude they have taken toward recent revelations that the NYPD has violated the Constitutional rights of American citizens by spying on them as possible terrorists and enemies of the state despite a complete absence of evidence of any crimes.

This is absolutely disturbing. Penning people up to mace them is police brutality. Period. What will it take to get the mainstream media to pay attention? If you follow the #OccupyWallStreet, you’ll find out that at least 80 were arrested today. AP and Wall Street Journal mentioned the arrests briefly today.

naturalmentality:

I just witnessed a mass arrest and police brutality. I was detained in a police barricade and threatened with arrest for standing on the sidewalk as a spectator. Not a single member of NYPD could justify their actions to me. It was a peaceful protest before the cops showed up. THEY escalated the protest into violence with their aggression and infringement of basic rights and I can confidently say that as a bystander who had no involvement in the planning or implementation of the protest. However, I will now work towards upholding the ideals and principles behind the Occupy Wall Street Protest. The protest successfully exposed how our freedom here in the US is an illusion.
